Tour Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival & Chilaw Transfer

Upon arrival at Colombo International Airport, you will be greeted by the Ceylon Expeditions Tour Manager. After a brief discussion of the trip itinerary, you will be privately transferred to Chilaw (2 hours). Here, you will visit the Munneswaram Kovil and Manavari Temple, both significant sites in the Sri Lanka Ramayana story. Later, you will proceed to Anuradhapura (3 hours) for dinner and an overnight stay.

The Munneswaram Temple is considered the oldest Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Sri Lanka. According to ancient beliefs, this is where King Rama prayed to Lord Shiva to seek relief from Brahmahasti Dosha after defeating King Ravana, who was a Brahmin. The Manavari Temple houses the first Shivalinga installed by Lord Rama. It is one of the four Shivalingas installed at different locations, including Manavari, Thiru Koneshwaram, Thiru Ketheshwaram in Sri Lanka, and Rameswaram in India, to cleanse himself of Brahmahatya Dosha. The Shivalinga at Manavari Temple is called Ramalingam because it was personally erected by Lord Rama.

Day 02

Ancient Wonders of Anuradhapura

On the second day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will check out and visit the Ancient City of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2-hour visit). Later, you will proceed to Jaffna on a scenic 4 to 5-hour journey. Upon arrival, enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in Jaffna.

Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka’s first capital, located in the North Central Province. It was a significant center for Theravada Buddhism for many centuries. Due to its well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan civilization, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 under the name Sacred City of Anuradhapura.

Day 03

Exploring Jaffna & Ramayana Trail

On the third day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will explore Jaffna, visiting significant Ramayana-related temples and other important Hindu cultural sites. Jaffna is a key location in the Ramayana trail, dedicated to Lord Murugan in the form of the divine spear Vel, a well-known symbol of Tamil religiousness. Enjoy a full day of sightseeing before returning for dinner and an overnight stay in Jaffna.

Day 04

Journey from Jaffna to Trincomalee

On the fourth day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will leave Jaffna and travel to Trincomalee, a coastal city known for its sacred Hindu temples and natural wonders. One of the highlights of this day is visiting the Thiru Koneswaram Temple, which offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. According to legend, Agastya Rishi built this temple under the guidance of Lord Shiva, who was moved by King Ravana’s devotion. It is also believed to be the place where Lord Rama installed the second lingam to rid himself of Brahmahathya Dosham. This temple is considered one of the Pancha Iswarams (five sacred temples) of Sri Lanka.

Day 05

Exploring Trincomalee

On the fifth day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will explore Trincomalee, a city rich in Hindu mythology and cultural heritage. One of the key attractions is the Kanniya Hot Water Springs, believed to be the site where King Ravana performed the last rites for his mother. According to legend, when he couldn't find water for the rituals, he struck the ground with his Trishula seven times, causing hot water to gush out. As his anger subsided, the temperature of the water cooled to its current state.

Day 06

Transfer to Sigiriya & Exploring Ancient Wonders

On the sixth day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will travel to Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. This UNESCO World Heritage site, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress with a rich history and legendary links to the Ramayana epic. A notable attraction is the Cobra Hooded Cave, which houses prehistoric drawings on its ceiling. It is believed that this Naguliya Cave was one of the places where King Ravana kept Sita Devi captive.

Day 07

Sigiriya to Kandy - Sacred Temples & Cultural Experiences

On the seventh day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will travel to Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The highlight of the day is a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the relic of Lord Buddha’s tooth, making it one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka. You will also explore the Royal Botanic Gardens, visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, and enjoy a traditional Kandyan dance show in the evening. Additionally, you will visit the Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, built by the Chinmaya Mission in honor of Lord Hanuman, who searched for Sita Devi in these hills.

Day 08

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya – Ramayana Trail & Scenic Highlands

On the eighth day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will journey to Nuwara Eliya, known as "Little England", a picturesque town with breathtaking landscapes and a cool climate. Along the way, you will stop at the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, a significant Ramayana site believed to be where Lord Hanuman searched for Sita Devi. You will also visit Sita Kotuwa, the first location where King Ravana held Sita captive after her abduction. This area is surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls, and streams, making it a historically and naturally rich destination.

Day 09

Nuwara Eliya – Kataragama & Ramayana Relics

On Day 9 of your Sri Lanka Ramayana tour, you will visit Sita Amman Temple, dedicated to Princess Sita, and Ashoka Vatika (now converted into Hakgala Botanical Gardens) in Nuwara Eliya. These locations are of immense significance in the Ramayana, as Sita Devi was believed to have spent time here during her captivity in Sri Lanka. You will then travel to Kataragama, a revered sacred city, with a stopover at Divurumpola, where Sita underwent the Agni Pariksha (the fire ordeal) to prove her chastity. On your way, you will also visit Ravana Waterfalls and Ravana Caves before reaching Kataragama for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 10

Kataragama – Colombo & Ramayana Relics

On Day 10, you will start by visiting the Kataragama Temple, dedicated to Lord Skanda. Afterward, you will journey towards Colombo, with a visit to Ussangoda National Park, a Ramayana site believed to be a place where King Ravana used the flat terrain to travel on his Pushpaka Vimana. Continuing your travels, you'll stop by Rumassala Sanjeevani Mountain, also associated with the Ramayana legend, before visiting the Galle Dutch Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Finally, you will proceed to Colombo for dinner and an overnight stay.
