Tour Summary

Two weeks gives you room to see Sri Lanka the way it deserves to be seen, and this route covers the whole island without ever feeling like a race. You’ll begin among the ruined capitals of the dry-zone north, climb a rock fortress, slow down on the east coast, then wind up into the cool tea hills before dropping to the southern beaches and a leopard safari. A private driver-guide takes care of every kilometre, so your only job is to look out of the window and enjoy a pace that leaves time to actually absorb each place.

Tour Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival and the Ancient City of Anuradhapura

Your driver-guide will be waiting at Colombo airport for the four-hour run north to Anuradhapura, the island's earliest royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sacred ruins sprawl across a wide, shaded site, so hiring a bike or tuk-tuk is the relaxed way to move between the towering stupas and the ancient bodhi tree.
Day 01 Activities
  • Meet your driver-guide on arrival at Colombo airport
  • Pay your respects at the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a 2,000-year-old cutting
  • Take in the huge white dome of the Ruwanwelisaya stupa
  • Stand beneath Jetavanaramaya, once one of the tallest structures on earth
  • Explore the Abhayagiri monastery ruins and Thuparamaya, the island’s oldest stupa
  • Find the carved moonstones and the quiet Twin Ponds
  • Get around the site easily by rented bike or tuk-tuk

Day 02 - 03

Beaches and Blue Water in Trincomalee

It's a short drive east, roughly three hours, to Trincomalee, where the sea turns calm and clear and the swimming and snorkelling are among the best you'll find here. You have two full days to wind down, dividing your time between soft sand, a clifftop temple and a centuries-old colonial fort.
Day 02 - 03 Activities
  • Visit the clifftop Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock
  • Swim and relax at Nilaveli or Uppuveli Beach
  • Snorkel or dive the reef at Pigeon Island National Park
  • See the natural hot wells at Kanniya
  • Walk around the old colonial Fort Frederick
  • Sit down to dinner at a restaurant right on the beach

Day 04 - 05

Sigiriya, the Lion Rock

Turning back inland, around three hours brings you to Sigiriya, the rock fortress near the top of almost every Sri Lanka wish list. Two nights leave plenty of time to climb it, wander the gardens at its foot, and step into nearby village life for a gentler, more local side of the region.
Day 04 - 05 Activities
  • Climb the Sigiriya Lion Rock for the frescoes and the view from the top
  • Stroll the terraced water gardens and the famous mirror wall
  • Fill in the history at the Sigiriya Museum
  • Ride a bullock cart through Hiriwadunna village
  • Cross the lake on a traditional catamaran
  • Share a home-cooked lunch with a village family
  • Add an optional evening safari at Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu

Day 06

Dambulla Cave Temple and on to Kandy

On the road to Kandy you'll break the journey at the Dambulla Cave Temple, where more than 150 Buddha statues and centuries of painted ceilings fill a run of shrines carved into the rock. Kandy itself, a few hours on, is the cultural heart of the island, a lakeside city wrapped in hills and home to Sri Lanka's most revered temple.

The town picked up its "Little England" nickname for its cool air and colonial bones, and it makes a fine base for a tea-estate visit and a slow afternoon by the lake.
